Vernon Loy Baker, age 87, peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior, surrounded by his family who loved him deeply.
Vern was a devoted child of God, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He grew up in Byron Center, Michigan, where he developed a lifelong love of the outdoors. He proudly served for five years as a reservist in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he spent most of his working years as a self-employed businessman in the irrigation industry. He was known for his strong work ethic, quiet determination, and willingness to give people a chance. A man of deep faith, he served as a deacon at the former Pioneer Christian Reformed Church in Cedar Springs and later attended Ada Bible Church.
Vern shared 62 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Linda. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work. They raised their family in Cedar Springs before settling in the Sand Lake area, where they enjoyed life on a small lake. There, he could often be found fishing, tending his garden, or tinkering on a project.
One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren, patiently teaching them how to fish, build, repair, plant, and appreciate the simple things in life. In recent years, he was especially blessed by time spent with his great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy and many treasured memories.
Those who knew Vern will remember him as a quiet and steady man whose love for the Lord, his family, and a close circle of friends shaped the way he lived. His gentle nature, practical wisdom, and the unexpected one-liners that could make everyone laugh will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fernand and Alice Baker, and his older brother, David Baker. He is survived by his wife, Linda Baker (Mac Eachron); his daughter, Heidi (Doug) Tackmann of Lowell; his sons, Richard (Jennifer) Baker of Cedar Springs and Eric (Kim) Baker of Indianola, Iowa; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his siblings, Dean (Gwen) Baker of St. Ignace, Dian Berry of Blue Springs, Missouri, Rosemary (Bob) VanLaar of Byron Center, and Mike (Helen) Baker of Hudsonville; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Vern’s hospice caregivers, especially Ashley, Kelsey, and Theresa, for their compassionate care and kindness during Vern's final journey.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 16, 2026, at Ada Bible Church, Bella Vista Campus. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow. Livestream of the service will be made available.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Corewell Health Hospice of West Michigan or Ada Bible Church or an organization close to your heart.
