Theodore John Foster 79, affectionately known as Ted, passed away on November 18, 2024, after a valiant battle with debilitating illnesses.
Born on June 27, 1945, in Lansing, Michigan, Ted's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and a profound love for his family. Ted and his wife, Lynda, were longtime residents of Williamston, MI, with his final months spent in Holland, Michigan, close to family. Ted's life was one of accomplishment and unwavering commitment to his community. A proud graduate of St. Mary's Catholic High School in 1963, he continued his education at Northern Michigan University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1968. His thirst for knowledge and desire to serve led him to further his education at Michigan State University, obtaining a Master of Arts Degree in 1977 and an Educational Specialist Degree in 1980.
In 1967, Ted took a step to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Naval Reserves. His dedication to service was further exemplified when he joined the East Lansing Police Department in March of 1968. His time in the police force was briefly interrupted when he was called to active duty by the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving aboard the U.S.S. Hancock from February 1969 until November 1970. Upon his return, Ted graduated from the 10th Mid-Michigan Police Academy in 1971 and embarked on a distinguished career with East Lansing PD. He served in various capacities, including patrol officer, school safety liaison officer, detective, shift supervisor, sergeant, and retired as a lieutenant in February of 1997, after nearly 29 years of dedicated service. Throughout his career, Ted was a recipient of numerous awards and commendations, reflecting his commitment to excellence and the safety of the community he served. Following his retirement, Ted continued to share his wealth of experience by working for the MSU School of Engineering, where he conducted research and development and was a primary instructor in the field of traffic crash investigation. His legacy of service and education is one that will resonate for many years to come. Ted's life was not all work; he was a man of many interests. In his younger years, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of jogging and was an avid golfer, a sport he cherished for the camaraderie and challenge it provided. He was also a stamp collector since early childhood. He truly relished the tranquility of nature through hunting and fishing, activities that allowed him to connect with the environment and instill a sense of conservation and respect for wildlife in his sons and grandchildren. Above all, Ted was happiest when spending time with his family, creating memories that they will hold dear forever. He leaves behind a loving family that will continue to honor his legacy: his devoted wife of 51 years, Lynda; his sons, Andy (Allison) of Hamilton, Michigan, and Theodore (Sara) of Madison, Alabama; and his seven adoring grandchildren, Jackson, Zakary, Emma-Claire, Tee, Luke, Hudson, and Levi.
Each of them embodies a piece of Ted's generous spirit, analytical mind, and loving heart. Ted Foster was a man who made a lasting impact on everyone he met. His generosity knew no bounds, his analytical approach to problems was always thoughtful and precise, and his loving nature was a comfort to all. His absence will be deeply felt by his family, friends, and the community he served so faithfully.
