Stella Carpenter

Stella Carpenter, known affectionately by friends and family as "Lilbit," passed away on February 23, 2026, in Wyoming, Michigan, after a courageous battle with liver cancer. Born on December 31, 1948, in Joliet, Illinois, Stella was a vibrant spirit whose presence illuminated every room she entered. With a zest for life and an undeniable talent in the kitchen, she spent her working years as a cook, gracing establishments such as Duba's, Quizno's, and Fifth Street Hall during Pulaski Days. Her culinary prowess extended beyond these venues, as she catered countless weddings, golf outings, and Super Bowl parties alongside her dear friend, Sandy. Family graduations and celebrations were also met with her delicious meals, enhancing the memories created during those special moments.

Stella's heart was rooted deeply in family. Memories of her childhood would often be shared with joy, particularly her whimsical tales of chasing fireflies in the cornfield across from her childhood home in Lockport with her siblings. As she transitioned into adulthood, she embraced the roles of wife, mother, and community member with grace and integrity. A staunch supporter of her children's activities, she treasured her time at Southwest Little League, watching her son play baseball while her husband coached. It was a gathering place filled with laughter and joy, where her unwavering support and presence would make a lasting impact.

With a jovial personality, Stella’s ability to forge connections with others was unparalleled. A trip to the grocery store could easily turn into a heartfelt reunion as she greeted numerous acquaintances with warmth and enthusiasm. Her spirited nature was complemented by a feisty and humorous demeanor that endeared her to everyone around her. A loyal confidante, Stella's friends will fondly remember her willingness to lend a helping hand, no matter the hour. She was there to celebrate triumphs and stand by during struggles, proving time and again to be a steadfast ally for those fortunate enough to know her.

Stella attended a one-room schoolhouse in rural Lockport and later graduated from Lockport High School. She relished family outings, vacations, and even trips to the casino, humorously referring to it as "the underwear store" so her children would remain oblivious to her whereabouts. Baking brought her immense joy, a passion she joyfully shared with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether it was cookies fresh out of the oven or cakes sprinkled with laughter and love, Stella's kitchen was often alive with smiles and sweet memories. Additionally, bingo outings became one of her cherished pastimes, providing an opportunity to mingle with friends.

Stella's proudest accomplishments radiated through her family. She married Joe Carpenter, the love of her life, in 1967, and together they built a family filled with love and laughter. Every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought her immense pride and joy. She was affectionately regarded as the "glue" that held her family together, embodying resilience and strength even amidst life’s challenges.

Stella is survived by her beloved husband, Joe Carpenter; her cherished children, Sherri Rettelle (Thomas Deneau) and A. Dean Carpenter; six adoring grandchildren: Megan (Don) Kuehn, Tyler Carpenter, Chaz Carpenter, Brandon Rettelle, Brandi Rettelle, and Kyleigh (Andrew) Miller; and eight great-grandchildren: Addison Kazmierski, Kinsleigh Miller, Astrid Kuehn, Bodhi Kuehn, Colt Miller, Kairhe Carpenter, Chaz Carpenter II, and Barrett Miller. She is also survived by her siblings: Rose Slachetka, Beverly (Dave) Skocy, Genny (Phil) Cooper, Pamela Erdy, Richard (Dee) Ponkauskas; and her brother-in-law, Bill Konieczny; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. In addition special sister in law, Caroline Toledo, aka cohort at the underwear store. Stella was predeceased by her parents, Lucille (Schwab) and Joseph Ponkauskas; her brothers, Eugene and Michael Ponkauskas; her sister, JoAnn Konieczny; and dear friends John English, Connie Harig, and Sandra Crapsey.

Stella Carpenter leaves behind a legacy woven from love, laughter, and unwavering loyalty. In her embrace, family and friends found comfort, and her spirited energy will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Her life reminds us all of the importance of cherishing our loved ones and embracing every moment filled with joy and laughter. Rest in peace, dear Stella; your light will forever shine in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know you.
