Roger Edward Thomasma, a beloved figure whose heart resonated with the joy of learning and laughter, was born on May 6, 1936, and passed away unexpectedly on February 14, 2026. He was cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him—students, family, and friends alike.

A dedicated educator, Roger graduated from Grand Valley University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. His career as a 4th-grade teacher was marked by an extraordinary ability to make learning engaging and enjoyable. With his guitar in hand, he transformed classrooms into vibrant spaces of music and fun, inspiring countless young minds to appreciate education. His charm and friendliness drew students to him; they knew they could always count on him for a smile and encouragement.

Roger’s warm spirit did not confine itself to the classroom. He was a man of many interests and hobbies, always eager to share moments of joy. He loved reading, indulging in the camaraderie of a Texas Hold'em game, and enjoyed the challenge of a good round of golf. A veteran of the National Guard, he proudly served his country and carried the values of service and dedication throughout his life.

His passion for music was infectious, and he will be fondly remembered for his singing and guitar playing. Whether jamming with friends or creating lasting memories with his sons in their band, Roger's musical legacy will continue to resonate through the lives he touched.

Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra Thomasma, who shared in a life filled with love and laughter. He was a proud father to his sons, Jeff and Joel Thomasma, and a devoted father-in-law to Kristy Thomasma. His legacy lives on in the next generation; he was the loving grandfather of Erin and Morgan Thomasma, and doting great-grandfather to Paisley Hanlon, Brealynn Lanting, and Bryar Lee.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Freda Thomasma, and his brother, Ken Thomasma. Their memories will forever remain a part of Roger's story.

As we remember Roger Edward Thomasma, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life not only marked by personal accomplishments but also by the countless lives he impacted through his kindness, humor, and love of music.
