Robert S. Vansickler

December 11, 1937 — December 25, 2024

Robert S. VanSickler, known affectionately as Bob to his friends and family, passed away on December 25, 2024, at the age of 87 in Kalamazoo, MI. Born on December 11, 1937, in Galesburg, MI, to Robert Sr and Virginia (Rasmussen), Bob's life was marked by his dedication to his family, his immense sense of humor, and his love for the great outdoors.

Bob's journey began in the small town of Galesburg, where he grew up, and later returned to make a lasting impact on the community. He attended Michigan Tech. His two eldest daughters were born in Michigan and then the family relocated to California where his two youngest daughters were born. After working at Aero Jet as a technical writer, they returned to Galesburg, MI. Bob then pursued a career with Stryker Corporation. He was fond of telling folks he had a hand in the design of the circular hospital bed.

His colleagues at Stryker were familiar with his quick wit and love of a good challenge, as evidenced by the memorable bet that had him laughing all the way to the bank—with a heavy load of pennies.

Bob's sense of humor and zest for life were evident in everything he did. An early adopter of the latest trends, from Tang, the drink mix of the astronauts, to the Rubik's Cube, he delighted in new experiences, mind-teasing puzzles, and games.

An outdoorsman at heart, summers were spent camping and winters snowmobiling. Bob's loyal companion, Nikki, his poodle-springer mix, was by his side on many hunting trips, proving that love and training could outshine pedigree.

As a dedicated Lions Club member, Bob gave back to his community in numerous ways, including in his role as a Little League Baseball umpire which he began when his grandkids all played on the same team. His love for sports extended to him becoming an Official with the Michigan High School Athletic Association for many years.

Bob's professional life culminated in his role as a sales representative for Parts and Associates, where he was recognized as National Representative of the Year, a testament to his hard work and dedication. Once retired, he entertained his friends and neighbors while calling the local community Bingo games.

Bob leaves behind a legacy of love, humor, and determination. He is survived by his devoted wife, Katheryn of Kalamazoo; daughters Diane Nelson of Tennessee, Joan VanSickler of Kalamazoo, and Susan Fayling (Brian Bowen) of Marshall; grandchildren Marrisa Motter (Ken) of Galesburg, Justin Nelson (Tricia) of Chicago, Christopher Fayling (Stacy) of Galesburg, Ken Pratt (Shae) of Kalamazoo, and Nicholas Nelson of Tennessee; and seven great-grandchildren; and his sister Jeannie Burpee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Kathryn Wells, and daughter Terri Bock. Bob enjoyed a lifelong close relationship with his cousin Keith Lamkin (Bernice) and spent much time with his brother-in-law, Bob Wells (Suzy).

Bob's life was a tapestry of shared adventures, laughter, and enduring love. His memory will be held in the hearts of those who knew him as a reminder to embrace every day with a smile. His passing on Christmas Day adds a poignant note to a life well-lived, one that will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends for generations to come.
