Robert Bolt

August 16, 1930 — March 23, 2020

Robert Bolt was enfolded into the arms of Jesus on March 23, 2020. Bob was born on August 16,1930, to Martin and Tena Bolt. He spent his childhood in New Era, MI, where he often returned with his children and grandchildren, sharing fond memories of his youth. The son of a pastor, he also spent time in Niekerk, Allendale, and Drenthe, MI. He was a proud graduate of Holland Christian and Calvin University, also earning advanced degrees from the University of Michigan and Michigan State. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, Bob returned to teach history at Illinois State University, but he spent the majority of his career at his alma mater Calvin University, where he would serve as an American history professor for 30 years. Upon his retirement from teaching, he continued at Calvin, working in the school’s historical archives for another 22 years. Bob was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, including attending two World Series games in 1968 and 1984. He loved to travel and, indeed, saw much of the world. He especially cherished family trips with his children and grandchildren. Throughout his life, this beloved dad and grandpa was a model of unselfishness, love, wisdom, and grace. His legacy of never-ending optimism, delight in solid family relationships, and spirit of adventure will live on in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He will be profoundly missed by his children, James and Elizabeth Bolt, Robert and Carol Bolt, Lynn and Larry Rosendale, Timothy Bolt, and Kristin and Scott VanderHoning; grandchildren, Andrew (Pandora) Bolt, Jason Bolt, Nicholas (Kimberly) Bolt, Kaylin (Tom) Bolt, Tina (Austin) Bolt, Kayla (Kyle) Bruinsma, Brittany (Ethan) Deur, Clarissa (Matt) Capel, Courtney VanderHoning, and Colton VanderHoning; great grandchildren, Angel, Lucy, Carter, and Charlie; sister Norma (Lloyd) Tinholt; sister-in-law Arlene Bolt; brother-in-law Robert (Judy) Balfoort; and special friend Suzanne Branderhorst. He was predeceased by his precious wife, Carolyn. A private burial has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date, when all will be welcome to come together to honor his life and legacy. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bolt Family Scholarship at Calvin University.
