Richard Gilbert Johnson

On Wednesday, September 16, 2026 Richard Gilbert Johnson "Dick", age 96 passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Dick was born in Kearney, Nebraska in 1930 to Josephis and Goldie Williams.  His siblings were Juanita, Kay and Joe.  Guy and Eva Johnson adopted and raised Dick in Michigan from age 3, along with his sister, Pauline.

Dick had a long, amazing life filled with many wonderful friends, neighbors and family.  He loved to laugh, dance with his wife, travel and collect coins.  During his travels, he has been to every state except one, Maryland.

After South High School, Dick spent a summer in Idaho fighting wildfires.  He enlisted in the Air Force, serving as a Master Sargent in the Korean War.  During his service in the Air Force he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Louise Miller.  After being honorably discharged from the Air Force he returned to Grand Rapids to work for General Motors.  He worked for GM for many years, eventually retiring at age 54.  During his long retirement, he loved coins and staged and promoted coin shows throughout Grand Rapids.  Dick and Betty had a second home in Florida and enjoyed being "Snowbirds" for more than 40 years.

He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Betty, his 3 children, Dave, Bruce and Brenda (Steve).  His 7 Grandchildren, Samantha, Mitchell, Jennifer, Ryan, Peter (Nicole), Ashlee (Ian), Kendra (BJ).  His 5 Great grandchildren, Tyler, James, Ian, Cainan and Tate.

There will be a small private ceremony at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Hospice of Grand Rapids.  Dicks family is very grateful for their compassionate, professional care during his last weeks of life.  They were a great help during a difficult time.
