Richard Paul Fischer (Sr.) was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He left this world on January 28, 2022 at age of 77. His spouse and children were able to be with him leading up to his passing.
He is survived by his wife Angeline Fischer who lovingly cared for him, and his siblings: Fred Fischer, Ed Fischer, Terry Mayville and David Fischer along with his children: Richard Fischer Jr. (Julie), Eric Fischer (Deanna), Amy Jensen (Nick), Step-Sons Jason Schulte (Roxanne), Ben Clark (Billie) and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Teresa Fischer, his Brother Kenny Fischer, Step-Daughter Nicole Horchner and his beloved dog & loyal truck companion Gerdy.
He was born to Frederick and Teresa Fischer on March 6, 1944. After graduating from high school, Richard enlisted in the US Navy in 1962 and worked as an Aviation Boatswains Mate Fuel 3rd Class, he served aboard the USS Essex and loved to tell stories about when he boxed in the service. After his honorable discharge he worked for Great Lakes Steel as a foreman until he retired.
Richard loved the outdoors and was an avid boatman, fisherman and hunter (he loved hunting with his sons and Brother Kenny in East Tawas off Curtis Rd). Later in life he fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning land in the North and built an amazing ‘Log House’ on Sugar Island. Richard, a skilled carpenter, did most of the work himself and had assistance from family and friends. The family had many enjoyable gatherings there over the years and have many fond memories with Richard (they especially enjoyed surprising Dad with extra visitors for birthdays and holidays). He enjoyed taking his grandchildren on hikes down to sand pit road and spending time with them. He was a skilled mechanic who owned a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette and enjoyed attending car shows and dragged raced for many years. He enjoyed spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals and pies for his family. Some of his favorite meals to create included his strong Italian ethnic background of pastas dishes and unique pies that would include ingredients that would surprise you and have the pie bursting at the seams. His wife, referred to him as “The Pie Guy of Sugar Island”. When you visited Richard you often found a western starring John Wayne, or Client Eastwood playing or his beloved COPS TV show.
He was a social person always willing to help someone in need, especially his family and friends. He welcomed strangers with ease and enjoyed the company of many. He often introduced himself to people with a joke or funny story, and while he wasn’t always well-received the first-time he usually found a way into the hearts of others. He was proud of his daughter Amy and was the talk of the Mackinac Island Eight Mile Run & Walk when he met Amy and her running team on Mackinaw Island and took the time to meet everyone there (sharing stories of his life and his love for his daughter). He loved to talk about his children, he introduced them as ‘My Children’ and would often take them around to introduce them to the people he had befriended, and sometimes even complete strangers. He had a way of fitting in with anyone and made everyone feel comfortable in his home and loved to bring friends and family together.
Richard will be honored in a celebration of life ceremony, with a short ash scattering ceremony at sunset. Please contact the family for details.
The family welcomes donations to the American Cancer Society in Richard’s honor.
