Ralph William Souter passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, in Grand Rapids, MI, at the age of 79. Born on March 24, 1946, in Detroit, MI, Ralph lived a life marked by devotion to his family, a passion for the outdoors, and a career characterized by loyalty and hard work.
Ralph's journey began as the beloved son of Wilson and Margaret Souter, who, along with his brother Carl and sister Marilyn Keil, preceded him in death. His early years in Detroit laid the foundation for a life filled with love and laughter. Ralph's heart found its match in Susan, his wife of 55 years. Together, they built a family and navigated the joys and challenges of life side by side.
The proud father of two children, Ralph is survived by his son Christopher Souter and his wife Stephanie, and his daughter Jill Beerens and her husband Robert. His legacy continues through his four grandsons: Andrew Souter, Adam Souter, Michael Beerens, and Isaac Beerens, who were the light of his life. Each of them will carry forward cherished memories of times spent with their Papa.
Ralph's dedication to education led him to Ferris State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business management. This achievement paved the way for a distinguished career with the Kmart Corporation, where he devoted 45 years of service before retiring in 2015. His work ethic and commitment to his role were hallmarks of his professional life.
Outside of work, Ralph's interests were varied and rich. He and Susan shared a love for travel, often embarking on adventures with Susan's sister Julia and her husband Chuck. Together, they explored many wonderful places, but Ralph held a special affinity for the beauty of his home state of Michigan. His favorite pastime, however, was spending time with his grandsons, where he imparted wisdom, shared stories, and created lasting bonds.
Ralph's love of golf was more than a hobby; it was a passion. He was a fixture in several golf leagues in the Farmington, Michigan area, and his friendly competitiveness and sportsmanship were well known among his peers. Ralph's connection to nature extended to fishing, a pastime he enjoyed at his family's former summer cottage on Walloon Lake,
Michigan, a place that held countless memories and remained dear to him throughout his life.
Those who knew Ralph will remember him as a loving husband, a generous father and grandfather, and a friendly presence in the community. His warmth and kindness extended beyond his immediate circle, touching the lives of all who crossed his path.
Ralph's life was a testament to the values he held dear: family, hard work, and making the most of every moment. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. Ralph's spirit will continue to inspire those he leaves behind, and his memory will be cherished forever.
