Nicholas Ekel

Nicholas “Nick” Ekel, age 87, of Vassar, Michigan, died suddenly at Gunnisonville Meadows Senior Assisted Living in Lansing on June 29, 2024. In accordance with Nicholas’s wishes, cremation has taken place.

Nicholas was born on February 1, 1937, in Asmolono Poland, the son of Antonina (Jurczyk) Wolski. He immigrated with his mother from Germany to the United States in 1949, settling in Wisner, Michigan, where Antonina later married Jacob Ekel. Nicholas grew up to be a devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather.

During his career, Nicholas worked for General Motors at the Saginaw Steering Gear facility, retiring with over 40 years of service. In his leisure time, he cherished mornings at Vassar Eagles, and enjoyed activities such as fishing, hunting, golfing, euchre, and playing pool.

Nicholas leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his four children: Laurie (Ekel) Hendren, Nicholas Jr and wife, Mary Jo Ekel, Steve and wife, Heidi Ekel, and Jeff and wife, Janet Ekel; nine grandchildren, Nicholas III, Lauren, Alexandra, Devin, Samantha, Dylan, Melanie, Dalton, Delaney; three great grandchildren, Sophia, Griffin, and Madeline; and his brother, Jake, and wife Janet Ekel.

He was preceded in death by his wife; Nancy Ekel and parents; Jake and Antonina Ekel.

Nicholas will be remembered for his warm heart, his dedication to family, and his zest for life. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
