Michael Mcdowell

February 10, 1945 — February 24, 2025

Michael Lee McDowell, known affectionately as Mike (Mac) to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the age of 80. Born on February 10, 1945, in Dorr, Michigan, Mike was a man whose heart was as grand as his smile, and it was this heart that, after a lifetime of love and laughter, quietly stopped beating, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and generosity.

Mike was the cherished son of the late Geraldine and Ernest McDowell. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Sharon McDowell, whose memory he honored daily with an unwavering display of love. His dedication to family was further embodied in his role as a loving father to his daughters, Crystal Pelletier (Martin) and Colette Puffpaff (Bill), step-son Donald Bronkhorst, and as a doting grandfather and great-grandfather to Misty Diaz (Armando), Kristopher Stencel (Kassondra), Alexis Stencel (Cody), Connor Gransow, Xander Diaz, Mia Diaz, and the newest joy in his life, great-great-grandchild Willow Butler. Mike is also survived by his caring siblings, Delores Wilcox, James (Phyllis) McDowell, Martin McDowell, Patrick McDowell, Sharon (Kent) Henderson, and Ernest (Kim) McDowell, who will hold his memory in their hearts forever.

Mike's vocational journey as a truck driver was only a small part of who he was. His true accomplishments lay in the full life he led and the love he shared with his family. His commitment to his wife was evident to all, as he would surprise her with beautiful flowers on the 14th of every month, a testament to a love that never faded. His daughter Cheri Bryant, who preceded him in death, was also a recipient of his boundless love and affection.

Beyond his family, Mike had a passion for the outdoors and could often be found fishing, boating, or engaging in his favorite pastime, wheeling and dealing in boats and cars. He was a man who loved to work with his hands, whether it was tinkering in the barn or sharing his extensive knowledge on how to fix just about anything. Mike was also a ruthless card player and could be found playing canasta and cribbage with friends, neighbors, and generations of family like Misty and great grandkids. Mike always had a stained coffee cup nearby as well as candy dishes in almost every room due to his insatiable sweet tooth. Those who knew Mike will remember him as a loving, adventurous, and incredibly handy man who was always ready to lend a helping hand, beat you at cards, or share a story.

As we reflect on Mike's life, we are reminded of the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Mike lived by this ethos, always striving to make life better for those around him. His legacy is one of selfless love and enduring kindness, and it will be carried on by the many lives he touched.

In honor of Mike's adventurous spirit, we take comfort in knowing that his journey continues beyond the horizon, where the waters are calm, the fish are plentiful, and the open road awaits. He leaves us with hearts full of memories, lessons of love and resilience, and the knowledge that the bonds of family can weather any storm.

Michael Lee McDowell's life was a beautiful journey that enriched the tapestry of our world. As we say goodbye, we celebrate the time we were privileged to share with him and hold dear the moments that will forever be etched in our hearts. Mike's legacy of love and adventure will continue to inspire us all for generations to come.
