Mary Grace Stephens, age 66, of Lansing, Michigan, passed away on November 8, 2024, due to injuries sustained in an auto accident. Born on September 26, 1958, to the late George G. Stephens and Patricia L. Carlson Stephens, Mary's life was marked by her vibrant spirit and her profound impact on those around her.
Mary was a graduate of Mason High School and furthered her education by attending Lansing Community College, Michigan State University, and the University of Michigan. Her dedication to lifelong learning was only matched by her commitment to her career. Before retiring, she served the State of Michigan as a Cancer Registrar Documentation Technician, a role she approached with meticulous care and compassion.
Throughout her life, Mary nurtured a variety of interests that reflected her dynamic personality. She was an avid skier and an active member of the Jug & Mug Ski Club. Mary was also known for her love of line dancing, embracing the joy of dancing alone as a new concept. Her passion for the water was expressed through regular swimming classes. Mary's creative spirit shined in her knitting club, where she crafted infant hats and booties, donating them to local hospitals and the Shared Pregnancy Women's Center. Her generosity extended beyond her creations; she was always ready to offer comfort and love to the babies and children in her life.
Mary's talents in sewing, crocheting, and especially knitting were well-known among her family and friends. Her hand-crafted towel toppers were cherished gifts, marking the seasons and holidays with a personal touch. Those who received these gifts knew they held a special place in Mary's heart.
Travel was one of Mary's greatest pleasures, often accompanied by her friends or cousin Nanette. While Florida was her favorite destination, one of her most memorable trips was to the Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii. Mary's bold and forthright nature was balanced by her deep sense of cultural pride. She celebrated her Ojibwe Indian heritage, participating in sweat lodges and embracing the traditions of her ancestors.
Above all, Mary's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. Her relationship with Jesus was paramount, and she fervently prayed for those she loved, always eager to share her faith and hope with others. In times of need, Mary was the one to call for prayer, a testament to her caring and loving nature.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, George and Patricia Stephens, and her brother George "Greg" Stephens. She leaves behind a loving family: brothers Robert, Thomas, and Charles; sister Lorri Kerr; special nephew Phillip Wesley Stephens; aunts Alice Vickery and Kathy Lindhal; and numerous cousins.
In her final lesson to us, Mary taught the importance of living each day to the fullest. Her sudden departure serves as a reminder that "Tomorrow is not promised." She lived a life rich with experiences, friendships, and love—a life that ended too soon but was lived very well.
Mary Grace Stephens will be profoundly missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her legacy of love, faith, and creativity will continue to inspire those she has left behind. Her memory will be treasured, and the lessons she imparted will endure in the hearts of many. Mary's life was a testament to the power of living authentically and loving generously, and she will forever be remembered for the light she brought into the world.
