Marianna Barkema

Mary Barkema, aged 74, departed this world on April 7th, 2024 in her home surrounded by loved ones. She was born on August 10, 1949 to Jacqueline and Jewel Penton. Mary's devotion to education was expressed through her over 40 years with Grand Rapids Public Schools. Mary's love of books and gardening was boundless and shared with everyone she knew. She was never without the beloved companionship of dogs, a custom she passed along to all her children. Her joy for traveling and pride in her Irish heritage was once celebrated with a trip to Ireland alongside her husband. Even day trips were an adventure. She held great value in celebrating holidays and sharing her time with friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Barkema. Surviving are her children, Susan and Carl Andrews, Robert and Annette Barkema, Stephanie and Rick Worden, John Merizon and Kimberly Fish. Grand Children, Alexandra and Nolan Quinn, Daniel Andrews and Stephen Andrews. As well as her sisters in heart, Patty Pennington and Linda Duncan.
