Lydia Barrera Mendez, 68, of Hart, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2024. Lydia was born on June 18, 1956, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Arthur Mendez Sr. and Viola Barrera Mendez. Lydia later moved to Michigan, where she graduated from Ludington High School as part of the Class of 1976.
Despite facing years of illness and the heartache of losing her son, Lydia remained resilient and strong, always putting others before herself.
Her home was a refuge for family, friends, and neighbors alike. Wherever she lived, she became the neighborhood’s caretaker, offering help to anyone in need. Whether you needed a place to stay, a meal to eat, or a listening ear, Lydia’s door was always open.
She embraced everyone with kindness, making her home feel like a place of comfort and love for all who entered.
Her sense of humor was one of her most cherished traits. Lydia was a jokester, always quick with a witty remark or playful tease. When you were around her, laughter was guaranteed. She could dish it out and take it, always keeping those around her in high spirits.
She had a special talent in the kitchen, where she poured her heart into every dish she made. From her homemade tamales and ceviche to jars of salsa and a variety of breads, Lydia made sure no one left her home without a full belly and something to take home.
Lydia also had a love for Bingo, frequently attending games on Fridays at the St. Gregory/Our Lady of Fatima parish center in Hart, Michigan. She never missed a beat, playing multiple bingo sheets at once, stamper in hand, as she excitedly waited for the winning numbers to be called. She also treasured spending time outdoors, appreciating the natural beauty of the State Park, enjoying picnics on the beach, and fishing in the peaceful waters of Ludington.
Lydia’s presence was larger than life, and though she is no longer with us, the warmth, generosity, and laughter she shared with so many will continue to ripple through the lives she touched, leaving behind a legacy of love and light.
Lydia is preceded in death by her parents, her son Lee Earl Tenney Jr., and her sister Mary Chavella Saucedo. She is survived by her daughter Christina (Francisco) Morelos; her grandchildren Anthony Tenney, Ethan Tenney, and Bianca Tenney; her siblings Arturo (Gloria) Mendez, Esther Mendez, Arthur (Andre) Mendez, Alberto Mendez, Edward (Kathy) Mendez, Richard (Maria) Mendez, Samuel Mendez, Angelo (Angela)Mendez, Brother in Law, Arthur Saucedo and numerous beloved nieces and nephews
