Lee H. Janssen

November 26, 1937 — July 28, 2025

Holland

Lee H Janssen Jr., 87, of Holland, Michigan, passed away peacefully in his sleep, with his wife by his side, on July 28, 2025. Born on November 26, 1937, in Zeeland, Michigan, Lee’s life was a testament to his passion for teaching, his love for adventure, and his generous spirit.

Lee is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 38 years, Shirley A. Janssen (nee Syfert), and his sister Barbara (Don) Kammeraad. He was preceded in death by his parents: Lee Janssen Sr, and Harriet Janssen (nee Boschma).

Lee is also survived by his loving family: James (Mary) Lee, Thomas (Marianne) Lee, and Sheri (Anthony) Galullo. Lee’s legacy and influence continues through his grandchildren: Kyle Demorest-Lee, Courtney (Todd) Simon-Demorest, Canaan (Beth) Demorest-Lee, Nichole (Patrick) Gaddis, Abbi (Derek) Lee, Michael (Nika Lin) Galullo, Eleanor (Michael) Daley, and TJ (Elizabeth) Galullo. Lee was a proud great-grandfather to: Audrey, Livia, Henry, and Canaan Demorest-Lee, Penelope Britton, Pepper and Birdie Simon-Demorest, Patrick Gaddis II, Nina Galullo, and Rose Daley. He will also be missed by nephews and niece: Kurt (Jenny) Kammeraad, Jon Kammeraad, and Jill (Rob) Garrison.

Lee grew up in Corunna, Michigan, where he first met his wife, Shirley. He spent several decades in Michigan‘s upper peninsula, many years in East Jordan, and recently moved to Holland to be closer to his family and many cousins.

A retired high school teacher, Lee dedicated his career to educating others, teaching reading, social studies, and Spanish. His love for the Spanish language led him and Shirley on numerous mission trips to Nicaragua where they helped build infrastructure and deliver medical supplies.  He also used his Spanish speaking skills as a volunteer interpreter for medical staff in northern Michigan, and as a volunteer for the Hospice of Charlevoix County.

Lee’s adventurous spirit was evident in his travels. He enjoyed backpacking with Shirley and his grandchildren, fishing in Alaska, going on an African safari, and spending winters with Shirley camping in their Casita at Big Bend National Park. An avid birder, he was often seen with his binoculars and identification book in hand. He was also a lifelong fan of Michigan sports teams, especially the Detroit Tigers and his alma mater, the Michigan State Spartans.

Forever a teacher at heart, Lee was always reading, learning new things, and educating those around him. After graduating from Michigan State, he taught for a year in Mexico and later worked for the American Youth Hostels (AYH), leading high school students on cycling trips throughout Europe.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Holland Hospice, PBS, or Alzheimer’s research.

Services for Lee will be held September 27, 2025, at 11:00 at the First Presbyterian Church, 659 State Street, Holland, Michigan.
