Obituary

Larry Jay Nelson

September 26, 1944 – June 20, 2026

Larry Jay Nelson, age 81, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Larry dedicated 28 years of service to Knape & Vogt Manufacturing, where he worked as a Test Engineer. He was a hardworking and dependable man who took great pride in his work and in caring for those around him.

Larry loved hunting and fishing and found his greatest peace in the woods and outdoors. While he cherished nature, his true joy was found with family. Nothing meant more to Larry than wrapping his arms around his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a protector by nature and found his most treasured role in being there for others whenever he was needed.

Larry and his beloved wife, Pamela, were known for their generous spirits and willingness to help. Together, they were often the first to arrive to set up and the last to leave to clean up, regardless of the occasion. Their quiet acts of service touched countless lives and reflected the kindness and selflessness that defined Larry's character.

Larry will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Pamela Nelson; his children, James Firlan (Lisa) of Hernando Beach, Florida, Urminda Firlan (Seth) of Lowell, Michigan, Amee Nelson of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Chad Goetterman (Ashley) of Greenville, Michigan.

He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Lynnsy Kraft (James), Kyle Firlan, Brian Whitsett, Spencer Goetterman, Colby Goetterman, Hunter Goetterman, Maverick Goetterman, and Zoey Goetterman; and by his beloved great-grandchildren: Austin Kraft, EllieMae Firlan, Micaiah Kraft, Lyla Goetterman, and Atreus Goetterman. Larry shared great memories with extended family including many cousins and their families.

Larry was preceded in death by his daughter, Kellee Nelson, Grand Child, Baby G and his parents, William and Dorothy Nelson.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Michelle Goetterman-Burch, the compassionate staff of Heartland Hospice, and the caregivers at Intersect Nursing Home for the exceptional care, kindness, and support they provided during Larry's final journey.

Larry's legacy of love, service, protection, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
