Joyce Mary Gillis, born May 16, 1948 in Grand Rapids, Michigan died on July 24, 2026 at the age of 78. She met her husband Charles Gillis and together they built a wonderful life here in Grand Rapids. She built a career and a family rooted in creativity, faith, and deep devotion to those around her. 

Joyce earned her master's degree in art education from Aquinas College and spent her career as an art teacher, shaping young minds and fostering their creativity in the classroom. After retirement she channeled the same passion into her family and her community. She was a devoted grandmother to ten grandchildren, earning the reputation as the most creative grandma- a title she wore proudly as she documented family moments on her grandma blog. (whatshappensatgrandmas.com) She was protective of the ones she loved, always present and engaged in their lives. Joyce was also a grant writer for Friends in Education, using her talents to support Northview teachers and students.

Joyce was also a big advocate for animal welfare. She spent many years of her life volunteering and donating to the Humane Society and other animal shelters. She also filled her house with rescued pets and encouraged her family and friends to adopt rescues as well. Her wish was to have any donations go to a favorite shelter of hers, Crash's Landing. 

Joyce is survived by her husband, Charles Gillis of Grand Rapids. Her sister Annette Terwin (Joel), Her three daughters MaryJo (Thomas) Tsimbouski, Christine Gillis and Karen (Joe) Scherbinski. And ten beloved grandchildren (Nick, Sae, Brielle, Ava, Angeline, Kaylee, Austin, Ryan, Channing and Tyler.
