In Loving Memory of Joyce Meistas Gillis

Joyce (Meistas) Gillis, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on July 24, 2026, at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer. Born on May 16, 1948, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Joyce was the beloved daughter of Frank and Anne Meistas. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Dr. Mary Meistas. Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Charles Gillis, her sister Annette (Joel) Terwin, and her treasured daughters: Mary Jo (Thomas) Tsimboukis, Christy Gillis, and Karen (Joe) Scherbinski. She was the proud grandmother to ten grandchildren: Nick, Odiseas (Sae), Brielle, Ava, Angeline, Kaylee, Austin, Ryan, Channing, and Tyler, who were the light of her life.

Joyce's journey in education began at Aquinas College, where she earned her master's degree before dedicating herself to teaching art at Muskegon Catholic and West Catholic high schools. Her passion for nurturing creativity in others was evident in the way she inspired her students, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of learning from her. Her dedication to education extended beyond her classroom as she tirelessly wrote grants for her daughters' schools bringing in a variety of art education programs that benefited many.

Joyce took pride in raising her three daughters, never missing a memorable event. She always made the home feel cozy and welcoming to family and friends. Hosting a plethora of holiday gatherings with delicious food and fun games that were cherished by all. She ran her own craft business, "Christmas Everyday." Through this venture, she shared her love for crafts and sewing, creating delightful patterns that brought joy to many.

In her later years, Joyce found a new avenue for her creativity through her blog, WhatHappensatGrandmas.com. This beloved blog chronicled the adventures and memories she created with her ten grandchildren, documenting holidays, "grandma camps," family trips, and everyday moments. Her efforts culminated in a memorable family trip to Disney World, a testament to her boundless love and generosity.

A devout Catholic, Joyce was a member of St. Alphonsus Church, where her faith and compassion were evident in all she did. Her love for animals was a cornerstone of her life, as she passionately advocated for their welfare. Joyce served on the board of the Kent County Humane Society and supported organizations such as C-Snip and Crash’s Landing, reflecting her commitment to making the world a better place for all animals.

Joyce will be remembered for her unwavering love, her quick wit, and her ability to bring joy and laughter to those around her. Her sense of humor was always evident, and she could make any dull moment a bright one. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched, and her family takes comfort in the memories they shared with her.
