John Thomas Redwine, beloved father, son, brother, significant other, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on July 12, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 64 years old.

John was born on July 8, 1962, in Florence, Alabama. From a young age, John showed an innate kindness and an infectious sense of humor, traits that endeared him to all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.

John’s academic journey led him to Eastern Michigan University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Professionally, John worked as a manager at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. After he retired from MEDC, he became a group fitness instructor at the YMCA, certified through Les Mills. John's energy lit up every class he taught. His hard work never went unnoticed; he left a lasting impression not only through his professional achievements, but also through the quiet strength, kindness, encouragement, and humor he brought to everyone around him.

Above all, John would say his proudest accomplishment was being a father. He cherished every moment with his twin daughters, Ashley Holiday and Sydney Redwine, nurturing them with unwavering love and support. His legacy will live on in them, in every lesson taught under the open sky, every laugh shared around a campfire, and every challenge faced together with courage and compassion.

Beyond his career, John's love of the outdoors and passion for movement were defining characteristics of who he was. A proud snowbird, he treasured spending half the year in Florida, where the sunshine, the warmth, and an active lifestyle brought him immense joy. He camped all over the country, hiked countless trails, fished, kayaked rivers and lakes, rode his bike for miles, taught fitness classes, and simply cherished being in nature—not merely as hobbies, but as ways of feeling alive, connecting with others, building strength, and sharing laughter, wisdom, and unforgettable moments with the people he loved.

John’s memory lives on in the hearts of those who survive him: his cherished daughters, Ashley Holiday and Sydney Redwine; his son-in-law, Aaron Holiday; his loving mother, Gail Nelson; his caring sister, Leslie Wallace; his brother-in-law Lester Wallace; his steadfast brother, Mark Redwine; his sister-in-law, Nancy Redwine, and his significant other, Krista Carpenter, whose relationship brought him comfort and joy. He is also lovingly remembered by all those whose lives he touched, whether as family, friend, or colleague.

John was preceded in death by his father, Jack Redwine; his step-father, Jim Nelson; and his step-mother, Beverly Redwine.

To know John was to know resilience in the face of adversity, humor even in trying times, and unwavering kindness. Through all obstacles, he remained kind and supportive to others, lifting spirits with his sharp wit and warmth. John had a generous spirit—quick to share an encouraging word, a thoughtful gesture, or a story to lighten even the heaviest days. His strength, especially throughout his illness, was extraordinary, inspiring everyone who walked beside him during his journey. He embraced each day with energy, curiosity, and gratitude.

John's light continues to shine through all the lives he touched. He was deeply loved by many, and he loved others just as deeply. Though our time with John feels far too short, the love he gave, the laughter he shared, the kindness he showed, and the lives he touched will continue to echo for generations. If love alone could have kept him here, he would have lived forever.

His family and friends grieve his passing deeply, even as they celebrate his unforgettable spirit and the rich, loving life he lived.
