John Robert Joling, a beloved barber, entrepreneur, and lifelong Grand Rapids resident, passed away on January 31, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on October 20, 1935, John left Grand Rapids Christian High School to enlist in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, proudly serving his country before earning his GED.
A master of his craft, John dedicated his life to barbering, cutting hair for generations of families and forming lasting connections with his customers. Known as The Chair Man, he also specialized in cane and rush repair, skillfully restoring furniture between haircuts. His passions extended beyond his work—he enjoyed winemaking, traveling, camping, reading and working in the garden.
John’s warmth and love for people defined his life. He was deeply committed to his faith, actively participating in his church and serving others with kindness and generosity. His quick wit, social nature, and devotion to his longtime clients made him a fixture in the community.
John is survived by his loving wife, Diane L. Joling; his sons, John Michael Joling (April) and Steve Joling; his stepdaughter, Jennifer A. Heemstra (Cory Wilcox); and his grandsons, Brent (and his partner) and Michael (Lisa). He was also blessed with four great-grandchildren. John is also survived by his sister-in-law, Arlene Joling.
In accordance with John’s wishes, there will be no services. Those who wish to honor his memory may make a donation to Calvin Christian Reformed Church, 700 Ethel Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546, or give online in his name.
A special thank you to Faith Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
