James “Buddy” E. Small, Jr., 82, of Stevensville, Michigan, passed away on October 15, 2025.

Jim was born on May 29, 1943, to James E. and Frances (Scott) Small in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, stationed in the Philippines.

A lifelong craftsman, Jim spent his years working with his hands from fabrication and metal art to running a Christmas tree farm at his home in Baroda. He was the owner of The Outdoor Kitchen, serving the community for over 50 years, and feeding thousands at Whirlpool picnics, the Apple Cider Century bike race in Three Oaks, as well as numerous family reunions, graduations, weddings, and local gatherings. He was also a familiar face at area wineries, known for his burgers, brats, and stir-fry.

Deeply committed to his community, Jim served on the Board of Directors for the Berrien Artists Guild, helping to oversee the Box Factory for the Arts. His metalwork installations can be found across the country. He was also a founding member of the Baroda Business Association. For all that he accomplished, when asked to describe himself, Jim simply said he was “a caterer”, though everyone who knew him understood that meant so much more than serving food. It meant serving people and serving with heart.

Jim is survived by his wife, Carolyn Drier, and her children, as well as grandchildren Tyler, Lindsey, Andrew, and Leah, with whom he shared a special bond. He is also survived by his daughter Keely (Mary) Small-Bradly, grandchildren Ashley (Steven) Aumack and Cortney (Shawnee) Williams, and great-grandchildren; his brother Earl (Lori) Small, nephew Earl David (Kasi) Small II, niece Emily Small; and his sister Deborah (Clark) Small Ballard; and his “adopted” family, Michelle and Stephen Ashley, and their sons Brandon, Ryan, and Bryan.

Jim was preceded in death by his daughter Jennifer Small-Walker, his brother Frank Small, and his parents James Edward and Frances (Scott) Small.

Jim’s legacy of creativity, generosity, and community spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched, the many shared meals, and the memories he leaves behind.
