James Robert Collins

April 15, 1951 — April 21, 2025

James Robert Collins, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and loved ones, passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on April 15, 1951, in Pana, Illinois, Jim's life was a harmonious symphony of love, music, and dedication. He departed this world peacefully in Holland, Michigan, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate for years to come.

Jim's early life in Pana set the stage for what would become a lifelong pursuit of musical excellence. His talents and passion for music were nurtured at Millikin University in Decatur, IL, where he earned his Bachelor of Music and studied under his mentor, Dr. Richard Hoffland. He then refined his craft further by obtaining a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, under the tutelage of Dr. Lloyd Pfautsch. Jim's educational journey was not just about honing his skills but also about preparing to share his musical talents with the world.

For over 50 years, Jim served as an Organist and Music Director in several Presbyterian and Episcopal churches, touching lives with every note he played. His commitment to music education was evident in his role as a Professor of Music at Millikin University and as a voice teacher in Chicago, IL. Jim was the founder of the esteemed Opus 24 and the Chicago Choral Project, leaving an indelible mark on the choral community. Additionally, his role as Musical Director for countless musicals showcased his versatility and his ability to inspire others through performance.

Jim's life was not solely defined by his professional achievements but also by the love and relationships he built along the way. He is survived by his devoted husband of 27 years, Michael Miller, who stood by him in harmony and love. Jim's sister Anne (Richard) Nicolas and brother-in-law Paul (Connie) Alexander remember him fondly as a cherished brother. His influence extended to his nephews, Michael (Kelly) Nieto, Matt (Joanna) Nicolas, Greg (Erin) Nicolas, and Bryan (Pam) Nicolas, and he held a special place in the hearts of his great-nieces and nephews, Nathan, Bryce, Asher, Jonas, Lily, Evan, Phoebe, Sam, and Josh. Also, very special to Jim was his Godson, Liam Jaeky. Jim's fur baby, Gabby, was a beloved companion who brought joy and comfort to his life.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Herschel and Esther (Marguerite) Collins, infant brother David Collins, sister Connie Alexander, and fur babies, Marbles and Minnie.

Beyond the concert halls and the classrooms, Jim's personal interests painted the picture of a man who found beauty and joy in many facets of life. He was a regular patron of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, relishing the grandeur of classical music. Musical theatre was another passion, providing him with endless hours of entertainment and inspiration. Jim's love of travel took him to many places, creating memories that he cherished deeply. A voracious reader, he found solace and adventure in the pages of books. Above all, Jim treasured the time spent with family and friends, recognizing that these moments were the truest form of life's melody.

Jim's story is one of a life well-lived, a song well-sung, and a legacy that will continue to inspire harmony in the world. He will be deeply missed, but the compositions of his life's work will remain a testament to his extraordinary talent and the love he shared with so many.
