James "Jim" Brooks Holt Simmons

June 18, 1942 — May 9, 2025

James Brooks Holt Simmons, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a love for the simple joys in life. Born on June 18, 1943, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Jim's journey through life was characterized by his unwavering integrity and his affable nature. After a fulfilling life, he passed away peacefully on May 9, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan.

Jim grew up in the quaint town of Portsmouth, where he developed a strong sense of community that would become a cornerstone of his life. He brought light and laughter to all who knew him, and his presence was a source of comfort and strength. In his professional life, Jim was a respected Insurance Underwriter, known for his keen eye for detail and his ability to empathize with his clients. His work ethic and professionalism set a standard in the industry, earning him the deep respect of his colleagues.

Beyond his career, Jim was a pillar in the veteran community. As Past Commander of both the VFW and the American Legion, as well as Past Chef de Gare of Voiture 946 in Lansing, he dedicated countless hours to serving fellow veterans. His leadership and commitment to these organizations reflected his deep patriotism and his desire to give back to those who had served their country with honor.

Jim's family was the center of his universe. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Johnette Simmons, who was his partner in every aspect of life. Their love story was one of mutual support and shared laughter, a testament to their devotion. Jim was a guiding force in the life of his son, Allen Simmons, instilling in him the values of honesty and hard work. His sister, Stacey Jones, and brother-in-law, Andy Jones, will remember Jim as the protective and caring brother who always had wise advice to share. Jim also cherished his role as a stepfather to Amanda and Scot, and he reveled in the joys of being a grandfather to his several grandchildren. His brother-in-law, Donald Gruden, will miss the camaraderie and the countless memories they made together.

When not immersed in his work or community service, Jim could be found on the golf course, where he played with the same precision and focus that he applied to every aspect of his life. He was also an avid coin collector, a passion that allowed him to connect with history and the wider world. Jim's love for reading provided him with endless hours of adventure and knowledge, as he believed that every book held a new world to explore.

Jim's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy, however, is one of love, service, and commitment to the values he held dear. His life was a testament to the impact one person can have on their community and the lives of others. As we say goodbye to James Brooks Holt Simmons, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man who was truly one of a kind. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
