James Frederick Hekker of Grand Rapids , went to be with the Lord on May 20th, 2021 at the age of 72. He was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Gertrude (Trudy Matice) Hekker his son Jeffrey and his Brother-in-law James Meeker. He is survived by his loving wife, of 51 years, Kathleen (Rockwell), 3 children Amy (Erik) Peckel, Mike (Jamie Helsen) and Cara (John) Coffman and 3 Grandchildren Graham and Lillian Peckel and Jameson Hekker. He is also survived by 3 siblings, Judith (Phil) France, Gerald (fiance RaMona Decorah) and Jackie (Warren) VanAllsburg, and there are many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, along with countless nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a caring husband, father and grandfather. He had a dry sense of humor and was generous to friends, family and strangers alike. Jim served our country honorably during the Vietnam War with the 25th infantry division. He enjoyed spending time with fellow veterans, and was a lifetime member of the DAV and V.F.W. post #702. Jim was a small business owner for many years. However, after attending Western University and Grand Valley State University found his calling as a substance abuse therapist. He was a friend of Bill W. for over 30 years and participated in helping others with the program. He will be deeply missed. A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday June 16th at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church 255 Carrier NE, Grand Rapids, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in his name to V.F.W National Home for Children 3573 S.
