Hendrik Gilaard

Hendrik J. Gilaard, 89 of Grand Rapids, Michigan passed away at his senior care home on November 30, 2025.

Hendrik was born on August 31, 1936, to Emile Gilaard and Elisabeth Puls. They are both deceased. Together they had three sons.

Hendrik is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Eddy Gilaard and Wilfred Gilaard.

Hendrik is survived by brothers and sisters: Hedwig Gilaard, Emile Gilaard, Anton Gilaard, Ruben Gilaard, Francis Gilaard, Mildred Gilaard, Martha Gilaard, Hortence Gilaard, Alice Gilaard, Georgine Gilaard and Gisela Gilaard.

Hendrik is also preceded in death by his close friends Dr. Gordon Harrod and Tamara Harrod. He is survived by his close friends Patrick Barbour and Mary Lou Barbour. He was family in every sense of the word.

Hendrik was born in Commewijne, Suriname on August 31, 1936, and grew up in the port town of Paramaribo. At a young age he joined the Dutch merchant marines. During his time at sea, he traveled the world. In 1963 he arrived in the Grand Ledge, Michigan and lived there the rest of his life. He would continue to travel to Paris, and other parts of the world.

Hendrik had a wonderful sense of humor with the ability to appreciate and express what was funny with a large smile and hardy laugh. He enjoyed good food, good wine and good fun. He will be missed.
