Gerald “Jerry” Jager, 94, of Saugatuck, MI, slipped away peacefully on May 10, 2025, leaving behind a world brighter for his boundless kindness and infectious smile. Born April 9, 1931, in Allegan County, MI, Jerry was the kind of man who made everyone feel like family, his gentle heart a beacon for all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his family and community.
For 27 years, Jerry shared a beautiful life with his beloved partner, Diane VanderMolen, their love a quiet testament to devotion. They shared a love of gardening, golf, travel, and entertaining friends at the fire pit.
He was a rock for his children—Gail VandenBosch (Dave), Julie Santellan (Lee Simmons), and daughter-in-law Cindy Bolhuis (Kevin)—and was a proud grandpa to his grandchildren, Kim Hoekstra (Shane), Krista Overway, Miranda, Matthew, and Natalie Santellan, Kamden Bolhuis (Carrera), and Annika Bolhuis-Peterson (Sam). His great-grandchildren—Ciera and Zachary Hoekstra, Colin and Madelyn Overway, and Oliver Santellan—brought him endless joy, and he loved sharing stories and laughter with them.
Jerry’s life was a tapestry of passion and purpose. A Holland High School graduate, he dove into learning, taking advanced courses while rising through the ranks at General Electric, retiring as a Purchasing Agent. His career also spanned Fitzpatrick Electric, Holland Furnace, and Jobbers Market, where he mastered butchery with his trademark precision.
Jerry’s story extended beyond work. He was a skilled golfer with four hole-in-ones to his name. Baseball held a special place in his heart; he played catcher in friendly games. He found peace in the quiet of bird watching, always making sure that the feeders were full. He found thrill in cheering for University of Kentucky basketball and enjoyed sharing that experience with his family and friends. Whether swinging a golf club, splitting firewood, or tending his pristine lawn, Jerry poured his heart into everything, his enthusiasm contagious.
Jerry’s kindness extended beyond his immediate circle. As someone with the universal O negative blood type, he generously donated over 15 gallons of blood during his lifetime, often being on stand-by for the hospital when there was an urgent need. This selfless act of giving was a testament to his thoughtful nature and his desire to help others.
Those who knew Jerry would describe him as not only kind, thoughtful, and gentle, but also as a pillar of strength and reliability. He was known for his positive attitude, and was rarely seen without a big smile on his face. His presence was a comfort to those around him, and his actions often spoke louder than words. Jerry’s commitment to his loved ones and his community was unwavering, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
Jerry’s life was one of purpose and joy, and his memory will be held in the highest regard. He was a man who lived with integrity, loved with his whole heart, and left the world a better place. His passing is a profound loss, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Gertie Jager; sisters: Johanna, Dorothy, Helen, Harriet, Gladys, Ethel and Jeanette as well as his son, Steven Jager and his wife, Delores.
As we bid farewell to Jerry, we take solace in the memories we shared and the knowledge that his legacy will live on through the lives he touched. He was a beacon of light in the lives of his family and friends, and his memory will forever be treasured.
