Gail Idema

July 2, 1947 — February 24, 2026

Gail (Breckenridge) Idema, age 78, of Grand Rapids, peacefully passed away on February 24, 2026, surrounded by her loving children.

Gail dedicated over 40 years of her life to nursing, caring for others with compassion and dedication. She was a devoted mother and grandmother whose greatest joy was her family, whom she always put first. She was the biggest supporter and proudest fan of her children and grandchildren, often driving several hours to attend their games and activities.

Gail loved to bake, and her children have fond memories of the birthday cakes she made for them, along with their favorite homemade treats. She enjoyed gardening and planting flowers, watching crime shows, completing word search puzzles, and had a special love for all things Christmas, especially her Santa Claus collection.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Marye Breckenridge; her brothers, Don and Dick Breckenridge; her brother-in-law, Phil Makay; and her nephew, David Andrzejewski.

Gail is survived by her children, Lisa Idema, Marsha Martinez, Melissa (Wayne) Czarnecki, and Chad (Shannon) Idema; her cherished grandchildren, Zackary Idema, Elyzabeth and Jessica Martinez, Brayden and Wyatt Czarnecki, and Chandler and Maverick Idema. She is also survived by her siblings, Lynn Makay, Jan (Mike) French, MaryAnn Breckenridge, Dave (Paul MacDannald) Breckenridge, and Dan (Mary) Breckenridge, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family extends their most sincere appreciation to the 5th Floor Cardiothoracic Critical Care Team at the Meijer Heart Center, as well as to all the medical teams who cared for Gail with dignity, compassion, and respect.

Donations may be made to The Santa Claus Girls of Kent County or The American Heart Association.

Per Gail’s wishes, a private family service will be held.
