It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gail Ellison, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who left this world peacefully on April 6, 2026, at the age of 85. Gail passed away after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease, surrounded by the warmth of her family and the love that she so generously gave throughout her life.
Born on a day of celebration, July 4, 1940, in the vibrant city of Detroit, Michigan, Gail was a beacon of light and resilience from the very start. She was the cherished daughter of Richard and Marie (Merila) Hatch. Gail's early years were filled with the love of family and the bustling energy of Detroit, where she formed lasting memories and friendships during her time at Redford High School, graduating in 1958.
Gail's life was a tapestry woven with love, dedication, and an abundance of creativity. She was a woman of many talents, with a passion for painting and jewelry making. Her hands crafted beauty, and her heart shared it generously with those around her. Her shopping trips were legendary among her friends and family, often resulting in thoughtful gifts that perfectly suited their recipients.
Gail's journey was marked by her strength and tenacity as she raised her three children, Gregg (Dawn) Updike, Scott (Katherine Lockhart) Updike, and Karen (Curt Dame) Updike, with unwavering love and devotion. Her direct wit and generous spirit touched everyone she met, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.
In 1982, Gail found love once more and married Michael Ellison in Plymouth, Michigan. Together, they shared 39 beautiful years of marriage until Michael's passing. Their union brought Gail the blessing of "bonus" daughters, Dawn (Jerry) Cowhy, Rosanne Ellison, and Laura (Chris) Shopshear, who she cherished as her own. Gail's family continued to grow, and she was blessed with 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Gail is now reunited in peace with her beloved husband Michael, her parents Richard and Marie, and her sister Sharon (Paul) Durham. Her legacy lives on through her surviving family: her children, her brother Thomas Hatch, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren.
In honor of Gail's life and her courageous battle with Parkinson's disease the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Parkinson's Foundation in lieu of flowers to support ongoing research and assistance for those affected by this challenging condition.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Butterfly Oasis and Gentiva Hospice, whose dedication and kindness provided comfort to Gail in her final days.
Gail's life was a testament to resilience, love, and creativity. Her memory will forever be a source of inspiration and joy to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered, as her spirit continues to guide and uplift us.
