Elizabeth “Liz” Canterbury, a vibrant spirit whose intelligence, wit, and warmth illuminated every room she entered, passed away on April 1, 2026, in Wyoming, Michigan. Born on March 8, 1955, in Washington, DC, Elizabeth’s life was a tapestry woven with passion, innovation, and unyielding dedication to the people and pursuits she loved most.
A passionate entrepreneur, Elizabeth channeled her brilliance into owning and operating family-friendly bookkeeping and accounting businesses, creating flexible opportunities that empowered working mothers to balance career ambitions with the joys of raising their children. This commitment was among her proudest accomplishments—a legacy of compassion enacted through business acumen. Of all her ventures, Elizabeth’s greatest corporate love was nurturing a small produce company in Jessup, Maryland, transforming it (with the help of an AMAZING team) into a formidable market contender, ultimately worthy of acquisition. Her sharp mind delighted equally in the nuts and bolts of small business and the precise art of forensic accounting, always scheming new ideas with a playful yet purposeful spirit.
Her academic achievements mirrored her intellectual rigor; she earned the equivalent of a Master’s degree through the University of Maryland, College Park, a testament to her lifelong quest for knowledge and growth. Beyond the professional realm, Elizabeth’s heart belonged deeply to her family—above all, to her cherished grandsons, Cormac J. and Matthew L., with whom she spent every treasured moment she could. Her joy in their presence was palpable, a source of endless affection and laughter.
Elizabeth’s vivacious personality was as multifaceted as her interests. Intelligent, thoughtful, and delightfully silly, she carried a great sense of humor that endeared her to friends and family alike. She found solace and adventure alike in the pages of books, in the company of Australian Shepherds and Siamese cats, and in animated conversations about life’s myriad challenges and wonders.
She leaves behind a loving circle of living family: her daughter Kathryn E. Shibelski and son-in-law Curtis L. Hamilton; her grandsons Cormac J. and Matthew L.; former spouse Paul Shibelski; her sister Whitney L. Canterbury and brother-in-law Joseph L. Lerch; niece Kelly L. Canterbury and her husband James J. Baker Jr.; great-nephews Zachary and Dylon Baker; and nephew Christopher Canterbury. Her life also touched many others who carry forward her legacy of kindness, wit, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David E. Flynn; her parents, Eileen and Whitney I. Canterbury; brothers Grant S. Canterbury and David E. Canterbury; and her devoted animal companions—Bling, her Australian Shepherd dog, and her Siamese cats Ally and Sophie.
Her passing, following an acute ischemic posterior circulation stroke, leaves a silence that echoes with the vibrant laughter and indomitable spirit she so freely shared. Elizabeth Canterbury’s story is one of determination, love, and endless curiosity—a story that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
To know Elizabeth was to know a force of nature: a woman who embraced life fully, who balanced strength with tenderness, and who wove a legacy of support and innovation that will endure beyond her years. Liz’s journey now rests in peaceful memory, a flame gently carried forward by those who loved her dearly.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Maryland. Information is forthcoming.
