Dudley Franklin Irwin, Jr., affectionately known as "Butch," passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, in Grand Rapids. Born on August 25, 1946, in Stanwood, he lived a life marked by dedication, kindness, and a deep love for his family and community.
Butch was a proud Vietnam Veteran, whose service exemplified his commitment and courage. Following his military service, he devoted his career to the skilled trade of machinist work, demonstrating the diligence and precision for which he was well known. Beyond his professional life, Dudley was an avid hunter and fisherman, pursuits that reflected his deep appreciation for the outdoors and nature's quiet beauty.
He will be remembered most fondly for his kind and loving personality, a trait that endeared him to all who knew him. His favorite memories were those spent sharing time with his family, whose presence brought him immense joy and fulfillment.
Dudley is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sue Irwin of Newaygo, Michigan, who stood steadfastly by his side throughout their many years together. Their children and their families carry forward his legacy: daughter Chimane Helder and her husband Mitch of Saint Petersburg, Florida; son Eric Irwin of Newaygo, Michigan; and daughter Heather Hosking and her husband Bill also of Newaygo. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and witnessed the growth of five great-grandchildren.
His siblings, who remain close in heart and family bonds, include his brother Don Irwin of Spring Lake, Michigan, and sisters Cheryl Wolbrink and her husband Stan of Allendale, Michigan, along with Vicky Tiano and her husband Mike, also of Allendale.
A special mention is given to Kevin Blohm, a cherished friend who brought additional warmth and companionship to Dudley’s life.
Dudley Franklin Irwin, Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and an unyielding respect for family. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who knew him.
