It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Denise Ellen Richards, a remarkable soul who graced this world with her resilience and unwavering spirit. On June 1, 2024, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Denise peacefully went home to the Lord, leaving behind a legacy of courage and love.
Born with Spina Bifida, Denise defied limitations, embracing life’s challenges with an indomitable smile and an air of sarcasm. Her childhood in the Flint/Davison area on Michigan’s east side shaped her tenacity, and at 18, she ventured to Grand Rapids, where she graduated from East Kentwood High School in 1982.
Denise’s heart overflowed with love—for her son, Leon Keely, and her soulmate, Calvin Keely, with whom she shared nearly three decades of companionship until his passing last December. An ardent cat lover, she cared for many cats throughout her life. She found solace in the pages of Stephen King’s captivating books, and listening to her favorite 70s and 80s hits, and her two favorite country artists, John Barry and Luke Bryan. However, it was her time spent at her computer, forging lifelong friendships and playing Bingo Blitz and Serpentine, that truly enriched her days; and oh how she relished the chance to correct anyone’s spelling or grammar—always with a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face. She enjoyed spending time outside on sunny days when her lilacs that she grew for nearly 30 years were in bloom, with the family cats on a leash just nearby; and enjoyed sitting in the rain and just feeling it wash over her on the gloomy days.
Throughout her life, Denise endeared herself to everyone she met, and faced her cancer diagnosis with bravery. Her sarcastic wit and quick responses brought laughter even in the face of adversity. She was a beacon of strength, a testament to the human spirit.
Denise is preceded in death by her soulmate, Calvin Keely; her mother, Carol Yvonne Press; her father, Jack Richards; her sister, Barbara Richards; and her nephew Christopher Wells. She leaves behind cherished memories for her son; Leon Keely, her siblings: Shari Glasco, Anne Wells, Karen Richards-Sinclair, Jill Markee, her twin, Debby Richards, and Jim Richards; and her Stepmother, Nora Richards.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024, at Grand Rapids Cremation Services. Additionally, a celebration of her life is planned for August 10, 2024, in Burton, Michigan.
