Obituary

Deborah Mitchell, a kind and gentle soul known affectionately as the "cat whisperer," passed peacefully in her home on February 22, 2026. At her side as always, was her loving and devoted husband, Larry Mitchell, with whom she shared a remarkable 49 years of marriage. Born to William and Darlene (Arney) Ward on September 8, 1954, in Kalamazoo, Deborah's life was a testament to her unwavering love for God, animals, friends, and family, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.

From the beginning, Debbie spent a lot of time with her younger brother and sister. They shared a closeness that became a bond of friendship that carried throughout her entire life. When Debbie was young, her parents took her and her siblings camping with her uncle, aunt and cousin. Extending into her adult life, she continued a special friendship with her cousin Steve, an only child, who thought of Debbie as a sister he never had.

For over three decades, Deborah dedicated her career to the Kalamazoo Animal Hospital, where her innate ability to connect with cats earned her a reputation that resonated through the community. Prior to her impactful work with animals, she spent time at the Kalamazoo Gazette, where she met Larry, the love of her life, beginning a journey filled with mutual love, compassion, and unforgettable memories. Larry lovingly referred to Debbie as, "Doll". They had a love like no other. It was a playful teenage-like romance that was obvious to everyone who saw them.

Deborah had a unique and sweet spirit, always putting everyone else before herself. Those fortunate enough to have shared time with her experienced her secret sense of humor and the warmth she exuded. She had a remarkable talent for making each person feel like they were the most important person in the room, never failing to bring a smile to their faces. Her devotion to her church family underscored her deep faith and belief in Jesus as God, which guided her throughout her life.

An artist at heart, Deborah poured her creativity into hand-made crafts and cherished setting up craft events alongside her mother, sister, and husband. She also used her creativity to write lyrics to a hymn that will continue to bless others well past her earthly life. Her adventurous spirit shone brightly in moments spent off-roading in her beloved Jeep with Larry and their friends. Together, they created lasting memories through camping trips and adventures at Lake Michigan, reveling in the beauty of nature and each other's company.

Among her proudest accomplishments was her venture into hunting; with Larry and her brother-in-law Fred by her side, Deborah at the age of 62 learned to hunt with a bow. Harvesting her first deer—a magnificent 10-point buck—during her very first year was a triumph she held dearly in her heart.

Deborah is lovingly remembered by her mother, Darlene Ward, her brother and sister-in-law, Kyle and Denise Ward, her sister and brother-in-law, Colleen and Fred Kelley, and her mother-in-law, Joyce Mitchell. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Debbie Mitchell, as well as Vickie and Heiko Kiwiet. Deborah's legacy extends to her six nephews, nine nieces, several great-nieces and nephews, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends who will all miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Ward, her father-in-law, George Mitchell, her brother-in-law, Gary Mitchell, along with her beloved grandparents and other relatives.

As we remember Deborah Mitchell, we celebrate a life rich in love and kindness, characterized by joyful laughter, creative sparks, and a profound connection to those she cherished. May her spirit continue to inspire us all to make the world a brighter, more loving place.
