David Webber Hershey, 78, of Lansing, Michigan, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at Sparrow Hospital. Dave grew up in Lansing, Michigan, and lived his adult life in Lansing and Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his parents J. Louise Webber, Harold Hershey and stepmother Luella Hershey.
He is survived by his children, Mark Hershey (Emily Geanacopolus) and Kate Hershey (Jamie Winquist); by his siblings Paul, John and Janet Hershey; and by his nephew and nieces Mary Rutledge, Liz Canfield, and Bob Sackrider. He is also survived by his grandson Henry Oscar Hershey, who he absolutely adored.
A loving grandfather, Dave was a fixture in Lansing, Michigan. He was a graduate of Eastern High School, where he played football and basketball, and ran track, where he ran a 4:35 mile. He was a proud Marine who trained at Camp Pendleton. He was an avid race car fan, golfer, and photographer. He took photos in the 70’s at the race track in Watkins Glen, New York, and was even an extra in Paul Newman’s Winning, where he’s seen briefly in the racing pit at Indianapolis with his camera gear on. Dave dedicated his career to arbitration and was proud of being selected for a prestigious program at Harvard University. Dave was an unwavering Spartan fan, and a lifelong fan of the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones. He saw the Beach Boys every decade of his life, first at Jenison Field House in 1966.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 27 from 12:00 – 3:00 at Piazzano’s, located at 1825 N. Grand River Avenue, Lansing, MI. His cremains will be dispersed in Lake Michigan this summer.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for contributions to Planned Parenthood of Michigan or the charity of your choice.
We will always hold Dave Hershey in our hearts. RIP.
