Daniel Phillip Unkefer, age 71, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and in accordance with his final wishes.
Dan was a laid-back, cool, and calm soul. He was known for his easygoing nature, his love of music, and the joy he found in spending time with family and friends. Music was one of the great passions of his life. Over the years, he was a member of numerous bands, sharing his talent as a guitarist and vocalist. In later years, he proudly performed with his band, Free Rein, where he continued doing what he loved most—playing music and jamming with friends in the studio.
Beyond music, Dan was an avid audiophile who enjoyed building and listening to his many stereo and audio systems. He was also a dedicated HO train collector, always appreciating the details and craftsmanship of his hobby. He loved keeping up with current events and could often be found discussing the latest news to get others opinions.
Of all the things Dan enjoyed, he cherished attending his grandchildren's sporting events, sharing meals with loved ones, and simply spending time together creating memories.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, William and Genie Unkefer, and his brother, Tom Unkefer.
He is survived by his daughter, Becky (Adam) Manika; his son, William Unkefer; his brothers, Paul (Connie) Unkefer and Dave Unkefer; his beloved grandchildren, AJ and Everett Manika; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and close family friends Daenie Abadiez, Sean Abadiez, Debbie Brooks, and Dan SQ, who will miss him dearly.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Dan's home on July 24th from 3-5, just as he wanted.
In lieu of flowers or monetary gifts, the family asks that donations be made to the University of Michigan Health Sparrow Hospice. Their compassionate care and support helped Dan and his family honor his wish to remain at home as long as he could by providing comfort, dignity, and peace to him.
Dan's music, laughter, kindness, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
