Daniel Lee Simms

January 9, 1979 — September 26, 2024

After a lifelong struggle with mental, physical and health impairments, at the age of 45, Daniel Lee Simms passed into the eternal care and keeping of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on 9-26-2024.

Daniel had what most would consider a limited life due to his severe disabilities. Daniel lived the life he did have to the fullest measure possible. Daniel made a profession of faith, was baptized, and became a member of the Georgetown Bible Church. The members of this church and so many others prayed faithfully for Daniel’s trials, tribulations and ongoing medical interventions and hospitalizations. Despite the daily challenges of his pain, his limitations and for a few years prior to his death the reality of total blindness, Daniel persevered and never lost his faith in God. Daniel manifested his faith in daily prayer, bible study, conversations with his caregivers and used each hospitalization as a chance to share his faith with others. Daniel impacted others with his testimony and changed the lives of several people in a powerful way.

Daniel will be sorely missed by his mother Debra Simms, and his longtime caregiver Betty. Daniel’s loving extended family includes his grandfather Bill McClendon, his Aunt Jatonne/Uncle Terry Tush, his Uncle Mark/Aunt Jackie McClendon, his Uncle Bill/Aunt Shirlene McClendon, and many cousins. Daniel’s father is Lary Simms. During his lifetime Daniel suffered the loss of his disabled brother Billy Simms and his grandmother Nancy McClendon but is reunited with them now in heaven. Daniel had a close loving relationship with Pastor Garry Koon who went above and beyond to insure Daniel’s wellbeing and safety over the years as his pastor, standby guardian, and most importantly, his friend. Many times, Daniel sought and received wise counsel and reassurance. Daniel required around-the-clock care and our family was supported by his caregivers Kathy Thompson, Beth Sas, Liz Lesert and Pamela Hammersmith whom Daniel loved and considered his friends, not just staff. Daniel loved his “tech tutor” Weston Boerckel, who gave Daniel the time and support he needed to pursue his fascination for his iPhone, laptop, smart watch and magic tricks over the last 10 years. Family friends Val and Mark Chulsky came to the rescue so many times, in so many ways and enriched Daniel’s life with their love and care.
