Cynthia Conklin passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2025. She suffered the effects of cancer treatments for several years. Most recently, she went through radiation and chemotherapy for an aggressive breast tumor. This was extremely hard on her, and she declined rapidly within the last several months.
Survived by her older sister Debra Schaap and her husband John Schaap, daughter Jennifer with her husband Sean Hartwig and son Paul with his wife Dominique Bentancort-Schaap, daughters Fiona and Luella. Also, Dave Conklin, younger brother, and Susan Conklin, younger sister.
We will miss her, but also, we are so happy that she is not suffering any longer.
Cynthia was born and raised in Holland, MI. She attended St. Francis elementary school, West Ottawa High School and then pursued her undergraduate studies at Grand Valley State College before earning a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Michigan. Her academic path reflected her passion for building better communities and finding innovative solutions to urban challenges.
Early in her career, Cynthia played a pivotal role in launching Resource Recycling, a company dedicated to designing recycling programs for cities. Her work helped shape more sustainable municipal practices and demonstrated her forward-thinking approach to environmental stewardship. Later, she channeled her entrepreneurial spirit into founding her own business offering shiatsu massage therapy. Through this venture, she brought comfort and healing to many individuals, combining physical care with her natural ability to connect with people.
Those who knew Cynthia remember her as smart, direct, helpful, and funny, all qualities that made her both an effective professional and a cherished presence in any room. Whether she was tackling complex planning issues or offering support through therapeutic touch, she approached each endeavor with clarity and compassion. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire thoughtful action and kindness.
