Charlotte Mae VanderRoest

September 7, 1955 — April 26, 2026

Wayland

Charlotte Mae VanderRoest, fondly known as "Nan" to those who loved her, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026, at her home in Wayland, surrounded by her loving family. Char was born on September 7, 1955, in Grand Rapids MI.

Char was the beloved daughter of Russ and Patsy Perry. She grew up with strong roots in the community, attending Portage Northern High School, continuing her education at KVCC, and later at the University of Phoenix. Throughout her life, education was a valued pursuit, but it was the warmth she extended to her family and friends that truly defined her.

Her professional life was marked by dedication and care. For nearly 17 years, Char served in various capacities at Jewel/Harding's. For the last 19 years of her working career, she devoted herself to Heartland Hospice, providing comfort and understanding to those in their most vulnerable times—it was work that resonated deeply with her compassionate nature.

Char's contributions extended beyond her career. She was active in her church community, volunteering energetically and leading numerous youth programs including Gems, Youth Choir, Vacation Bible School, and Sunday school. Her faith and dedication were sources of strength and joy not only for herself but for everyone she touched.

She enjoyed making lasting memories with her family. Nan treasured family vacations filled with laughter, cook outs, time in the sun and water, and the adventure of long road trips. Mealtimes with family and friends were cherished. Sundays were often spent gathered around the table for family dinners with all the grandchildren with board games or dominoes to follow.

Char delighted in simple pleasures—spending time with her family, getting lost in a good book, basking in the sun, knitting beautiful creations, and indulging in shopping sprees that brought smiles to those she loved.

She leaves behind her devoted husband of 54 years, Tom VanderRoest; her loving daughter, Shannon (Chuck) Bailey; son Chad (Jen) VanderRoest; and the light of her life, her grandchildren: Chase Bailey (Grace VanPopering), Dylan Bailey, Carly VanderRoest, Ellie VanderRoest, and Trena VanderRoest. They carry her spirit in their hearts and the legacy of caring and love she so generously gave. She was preceded in death by her dear parents, Russ and Patsy Perry.

Char fought her battle with cancer with courage and grace, ultimately finding peace in the presence of faith and her family at home. Her kindness and caring continues to inspire all who knew her.

A service to celebrate Char’s life will be held at Caledonia Christian Reformed Church, located at 9957 Cherry Valley Ave. SE, Caledonia, MI 49316. Visitation will be held May 4th at 10 a.m., followed by the service at 11 a.m., with a luncheon after. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring her memory.

Charlotte Mae VanderRoest’s life was full of love, family and faith —a legacy that will endure through the hearts of those that knew her. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
