Charles E. Johnson, known to most as Gene or Opa, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Belmont, Michigan on Sunday, March 29, 2026. Gene lived a life marked by devotion to his family, his friends, and his faith. He was born on a farm in Effingham, IL on December 4, 1936. While still a young boy his family moved to Detroit, where he attended Cass Tech High School. His intelligence and skill in mathematics and science led him to Wayne State University, where he earned a degree in engineering, setting the foundation for a distinguished career. Gene dedicated his professional life to designing office building, churches, and custom homes across the state. One memorable chapter included relocating to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands for a summer work assignment, a time during which his family was able to join him, creating lasting memories and a strong desire to revisit the Caribbean as often as possible.
At the age of 18, Gene decided to save money for college by joining the United States Army. While stationed in Frankfurt, Germany he met the love of his life, Helga (Heerling) Johnson. A few short years later, and countless letters sent across the ocean, Helga moved to Michigan and the 2 soon wed in Grosse Pointe, MI.
Gene’s time abroad not only influenced his personal life but also awakened in him a deep appreciation for travel. Over the years, he and Helga explored many countries, including Finland, Russia, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, France, Greece, Israel, and Egypt. A notable adventure included a trip to New Zealand with his close friend Mary Elenbaas to watch the United States sail in the America's Cup Race. But his favorite vacation was when he chartered a catamaran and took the whole family around the British Virgin Islands.
Gene’s interests extended beyond his work and travels. In the Detroit area, he was an active member of his home church in Dearborn, Michigan. A true sports enthusiast, he enjoyed participating in volleyball, tennis, basketball, and fast-pitch softball leagues throughout his adult life. Winter brought opportunities for cross-country skiing, but again, some of his fondest times were spent sailing with family and friends on Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair.
After retiring, Gene and Helga relocated to Grand Rapids to be near their children and grandchildren. There, Gene delighted in visiting smaller local venues to enjoy a beer and live music whenever the opportunity arose. He is survived by his sons, Mark and Scott; his daughters-in-law, Jody and Tara; and four grandchildren: Elan, Stefan, Shelby, and Shane. The close knit family provided him with immense joy and comfort, especially during his final days, when three of his grandchildren were able to visit him. Gene leaves behind a legacy of dedication, adventure, and warmth. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather, a devoted husband, a respected engineer, and a man with a zest for life and exploration. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
