Cassandra A. (Gunn) Batema, known affectionately as Sandy to her friends and family, passed away on February 18, 2025, at the age of 61. Born November 22, 1963, in Holland, Michigan to Ferna (Walker) Gunn and Larry Gunn. Sandy was surrounded by the love and warmth of her family. Her courageous battle with cancer showcased her unwavering spirit and the strength that characterized her entire life. Sandy grew up in Holland, Michigan, and attended Holland High, and she lived a life that was vibrant.
Family was the cornerstone of Sandy’s life. Together with her husband of 37 years, Shane Batema, they navigated the waters of life with grace and unbreakable bond. Sandy was a devoted mother to her children, Lindsey (Travis) Hanges and Heather Batema, and she adored her grandchildren, Hailey Meadows, Jaxsen Meadows, Ashley Vandyk, and Summer Hamilton, who were the light of her life. She was the “fun” grandma, taking the kids on exciting outings, hosting boat trips, and generally spoiling them rotten. Zayden, her first great-grandchild was born in January 2025.
Sandy’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and friendship. Her ability to connect with people and her spirited nature were defining characteristics that will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. As a grandmother, mother, wife and friend, she provided a safe haven and listening ear to everyone around her. Sandy’s adventurous soul led her to explore, create unforgettable memories, and inspire those she met to embrace life’s journey with an open heart. Sandy’s love for animals was evident to all who knew her.
Sandy’s memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories and memories shared by those who loved her. Her impact on the world was profound as it was heartfelt, and her absence will be felt by many lives she touched.
Today, as we reflect on Sandy’s life, we remember a woman of extraordinary love, whose presence was a gift to us all. We bid a farewell to Cassandra A. Batema, a remarkable soul whose spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. Though she has left this earthly realm, her legacy of love, adventure and friendship will endure forever in the hearts of those she has left behind.
