Calvin Joseph Mason

Calvin Joseph "Joe" Mason, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, July 29th, 2026. He was born on January 14, 1959, to Calvin and Ann Mason. After the passing of his mother during his college years, his stepmother, Barbara Mason, became a part of his family and remained a cherished presence throughout his life.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Barb Mason. Together they built a home marked by faith, laughter, and devotion to one another. They shared a love for dancing, camping, taking silly photos, and making memories together.

He was a proud father to Ryland (Amy) Magoon IV, Alex (Erin) Mason, and Dylan (Hannah) Mason. Few things brought Joe more joy than being "Grandpa" to Ryland V, Brody, Marin, Perrine, Wesley, and Shane. Whenever they were around, you could find Joe on the floor with them wrestling and playing games. They never had to wonder if Grandpa loved them.

Joe is also survived by his sisters, Sue (Bruce) McKenzie, Mary Mason, and Carrie (Johan) Skogfeldt; his step-siblings, David Johanningsmeier, Doug (Julie) Johanningsmeier, Dwight Johanningsmeier, Pam (Rich) Smith, and Dan (Amy) Johanningsmeier; along with his brothers and sisters in law, and other loved family members and friends.

Joe was an exceptionally gifted musician, especially on the trombone. Music was a language that came naturally to him when words didn’t. It was just one of the many ways he brought joy to others and worshipped the Lord.

He was successful and worked diligently throughout his career in energy and environmental health. He was proud of his work and willing to make personal sacrifices to ensure his family had what they needed and to get the job done, but carried that success and weight without arrogance or complaint, faithfully doing whatever was necessary to care for the people he loved.

Above all else, Joe loved Jesus. His faith was genuine, steady, and evident not only in what he believed but in the way he lived. He was a kind and gentle man who treated people with grace, loved quietly and faithfully, and consistently put others before himself. He was never one to seek attention or recognition, but elevated and encouraged those around him. Despite his success, if you asked those who knew him what they remembered most, they probably wouldn’t share stories of his accomplishments. They would tell you how he made them feel. How he loved them. How he made them feel welcome and valuable. They'd talk about his kindness, his goofy sense of humor, the way he loved his family, and the quiet faith that drew people in and pointed them to Jesus.

His family grieves deeply, but not without hope. Because of the grace of Jesus Christ, they rejoice knowing that Joe is now home with the Savior he loved and faithfully followed. The impact and legacy he leaves behind is great and immeasurable. It is not one of fame or recognition, but of faithfulness, humility, and love. A husband who loved and honored his wife, a father who listened to and encouraged his kids, a grandpa who played on the floor and (mostly) embraced the noise and chaos, and a man who quietly pointed people to Jesus with his presence and the way he lived.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 13th, from 6:00 - 7:30 PM at Berkley Hills Church. A celebration of Joe's life will take place on Friday, August 14th, at 10:30 AM at Berkley Hills Church, with an hour of visitation with the family beforehand.
