**In Loving Memory of Calvin 'Cal' Lee Keely**
July 9, 1957 - December 7, 2023
Calvin 'Cal' Lee Keely, 66, of Grand Rapids, MI passed away the morning of Thursday, December 7th, 2023, at Trinity Health Grand Rapids.
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Cal was born into this world on a bright summer's day in 1957. Cal was a lifelong resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a beacon of strength and generosity in the community he fiercely loved.
Cal graduated from Grand Rapids Central High School in 1975, distinguished as drum major, a testament to his leadership and love for music. His pride in service was evident during his time in the United States Navy, serving as an Aviation Structural Mechanic at the Meridian Mississippi Naval Air Station, where his outstanding dedication was recognized with a Meritorious Unit Commendation—an accolade that spoke volumes of his commitment and character.
His eclectic careers and the stories they birthed ranged from driving a cab for Port City Cab with his beloved pet cockatoo Poncho by his side, to hoisting pianos atop buildings—a reminder of his everyman's touch and his ability to imprint lasting memories, not just on stone, wood, and steel, but in people's hearts. Cal's captivating tales of his life will be shared and cherished for decades to come by everyone who had the pleasure to know him.
In 1994, Cal's wandering heart found its compass and mate in Denise Ellen Richards. Together they embraced a life of love, laughter, and sarcasm, embodying the spirit of teamwork and togetherness in their 29 years together. Beyond his family life, Cal was deeply involved in community sports, serving both as a coach and umpire for his eldest son Stephen's baseball team at Southwest Little League, and as a bowling coach. His enthusiasm for nurturing talent and sportsmanship left a lasting impact on the young athletes under his mentorship.
With a passion for innovation and problem-solving, Cal further contributed his time as a handyman mentor for his youngest son Leon's robotics team. His inventive spirit and practical skills were invaluable, teaching more than just technical know-how, but imparting wisdom on teamwork, perseverance, and ingenuity.
A craftsman with his hands, Cal was an unrivaled jack-of-all-trades—there was no task too daunting, no problem too intricate for Cal to mend or improve. This same craftsmanship and ingenuity painted his approach to life; he built bridges where there were gaps and mended hearts where there was sorrow.
Cal is survived by his devoted life partner and soulmate, Denise Ellen Richards; sons, Leon Duane Keely and Stephen Adam Keely; grandsons, Maverick 'B' Bradley, Briley Joseph; and siblings, Patsy VanDyken, Diane Keely, Donald Keely, and his twin, Melvin (Jude) Keely. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leon L. Keely and Doris Keely (Seeley), and his brother, Michael (Teresa) Keely.
A true patriarch, Cal was the heartbeat of his family—their guide, champion, and most ardent advocate. His unwavering dedication, unconditional love, and vibrant community presence are his enduring legacy.
A celebration of Cal's extraordinary life will be held in the upcoming summer, near the date of his birth—an event met with merriment as he would have wished. Details will be shared in due course, honoring a life so joyously lived.
In lieu of flowers, Cal’s family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Animal Rescue Coalition of Mecosta County, causes close to his heart.
Cal lived by the philosophy, "Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why we call it 'The Present'." This sentiment captures the essence of his approach to each day—treasured, embraced, and lived to the fullest. May we all aspire to such an infectious zest for life.
Rest in peace, Cal, until we meet again someday.
