Calvin “Wayne” Carpenter Jr. of Hopkins, Michigan passed away peacefully, from natural causes, in Grand Rapids, Michigan on January 8, 2020 at the age of 62. Wayne is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mary LaVona (Walker) Carpenter; daughters, Patricia Ann Kelm (Carpenter) and wife Rebecca Kelm; bonus children, Jeff and Denise Dowdy, Jim Stone and life partner Michelle Hines; sibling Michael Bruce Carpenter; grandkids; Kody Reaume, Elenor Reaume, Danielle Worm (Vredeveld), Alicia Lucero (Striegle), Jorden Vredeveld, Michael Bennett; nieces, nephews, and additional friends and family. Wayne is preceded in death by his brother and sister, Joey Carpenter & Ann Marie Carpenter of Hopkins, Michigan. Wayne was born on August 5, 1957 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to parents Calvin Wayne Carpenter Sr. and Shirley Ann Carpenter (Roe). He graduated from Zeeland High School in 1976 and married his beloved wife of 43 years, Mary LaVona Walker, on May 21, 1977. Wayne and Mary welcomed one daughter into their home, Patricia Ann Kelm (Carpenter). Wayne’s daughter Patty will remember her dad as a man who was never afraid to state his love for her; had great taste in music; was a big teddy bear; and who enjoyed visiting the Soo Locks. Wayne’s wife Mary will remember her husband by his love of bonfires, boats, and camping at Whiskey Creek. She fondly remembers Wayne sitting, listening to music, and “smoking” his “alternative cigarettes”. The family would also like to thank the caregivers and staff of Metro Health Hospital of Grand Rapids, Michigan for their continual love and care through this difficult time. Metro Health has also assisted in continual support for Wayne's wife Mary. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Metro Health. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for January 17, 2020 starting with a brief service at 11:00am at New Life Church located at 160 Pine St. Wayland, Michigan 49348. Directly after the service guests are invited to a lunch on located at 1896 135th Ave. Hopkins, Michigan 49328. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Wayne’s life and continual memory. If guests would like they are able to bring a balloon or lantern for a final farewell after the celebration of life service. The family is requesting assistance with final expenses in lieu of flowers.
