Dr. Bruce Henry Baker, age 72, a compassionate physician, visionary leader in addiction medicine, and beloved friend and father, passed away on May 6, 2026, after a short illness. He leaves behind a profound legacy of healing, innovation, and humanity.
Bruce began his medical career in anesthesiology following his residency at Duke University, where he served as Chief Resident. He went on to practice as an anesthesiologist in Grand Rapids, Michigan, holding leadership roles including Chairman of Anesthesia at Ferguson Hospital and serving on the Medical Education Committee at Saint Mary’s Hospital.
Over time, his path evolved into occupational medicine, where he provided care for workers across multiple industries. Yet it was in addiction medicine that Dr. Baker found his true calling. A pioneer in the field, he became board-certified in addiction medicine and devoted his life to expanding access to treatment and recovery services.
Bruce founded West Brook Recovery Center, where he served as Medical Director and helped shape modern approaches to addiction recovery. He played a critical role in developing medication-assisted treatment programs, including methadone services, for Cherry Health and established a methadone clinic in Muskegon. His leadership extended throughout West Michigan, where he helped develop addiction treatment programs in Benzie and Manistee counties and was the first to partner with Newaygo County Mental Health and Arbor Circle in Newaygo County to implement Medication Assisted Treatment - an effort that has saved countless lives.
Throughout his career, Bruce held numerous medical directorships, including Newaygo CMH and Our Hope, and remained deeply committed to patient care, education, and advancing the field of addiction medicine. His work impacted thousands of individuals and families, offering hope where it was often scarce. He will be remembered for his passion, energy, and caring by the thousands of patients he served.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bruce was known for his warmth, humor, and extraordinary kindness. He had a fun-loving spirit and a remarkable ability to connect with others, making everyone feel seen and valued. He also had a unique and joyful hobby: collecting pinball machines and meticulously rewiring them with LED lighting, a reflection of both his curiosity and his playful spirit. Those who knew him best remember not only his brilliance, but his generosity of heart.
He is survived by his daughters Emily Baker and Lauren (Jason) Blanford, and sons Julian Baker and Calder (Cassie) Baker, grandchildren Fiona and Asa Blanford. Bruce is also survived by his partner Mary Capitano, and close friends Tricia Beattie-Luchies and Carol Mills.
Dr. Bruce Baker’s legacy lives on in the thousands of lives he saved, the communities he strengthened, and the compassion he brought into the world. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In accordance with Bruce’s wishes, there will be no service.
