Betty Essenburg, age 97, was called to her eternal home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 7, 2026. She passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by the family she so dearly loved.
Betty was born in Holland, Michigan, on May 9, 1928, to Neal and Jeanette Kuiken. One of five children, she was a 1946 graduate of Holland High School. Following a blind date, Betty married the love of her life, Paul Essenburg, on her birthday in 1952. Together, they shared 73 years of devoted marriage, building a life centered on faith and family.
A woman of great creativity, Betty’s hands were rarely still. She enjoyed a variety of crafts throughout her life, most notably weaving cross bookmarks to support her church’s mission work. Betty and Paul shared a spirit of adventure, enjoying many years of sailing, camping in their motor home, wintering in Florida, and traveling the world together. Above all, she cherished her family, making every gathering special with her presence and care.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her beloved husband, Paul; her daughters, Nancy Essenburg and Sandy (Steve) Heerspink; her grandchildren, Adam (Susan) Heerspink, Lee (Bethany) Heerspink, James Hoving, and Katey (Matt) Bruursema; and five cherished great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Keystone Hospice and Comfort Keepers for the exceptional and compassionate care provided during Betty’s final days.
A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Reformed Church or Keystone Hospice.
