Edward Mattix

December 15, 1947 — January 28, 2023

Edward Ireland Mattix Sr. of Rockford, formerly of Grand Rapids passed away on January 28, 2023, after being on dialysis for two and a half years. A Loving father and husband, he was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas on December 15, 1947. Edward is the son of the late, Fred I. Mattix and Grace E. Bast, daughter Jackie Mattix, brothers: Bill and Ronald Mattix, and stepsister Jaylinn Tanis, and sister, Stella Jane.


Edward is survived by his wife, Roberta (Cathy) Mattix; son, Edward Jr.; daughter, Stella (Raymond); adopted son, Earrick Williams; Stepbrothers, Rick and Danny Bast; stepsisters, Deb (Steve) Stephens, Sandy Bast, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, & nephews.


Edward retired from the city of Grand Rapids as a sanitation engineer. He was a Sheriff Reserve Officer for the Kent County Sheriff Department for about fifteen years. He worked part time for different security companies. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Edward worked security for the dedication of the President Ford Museum. He had the opportunity to meet Bob Hope. Edward was a bodyguard for President Carter’s brother, Billy when he did an appearance in Grand Rapids in the 80s. He loved riding his motorcycle and was an 8th degree black belt in karate. Edward also taught Martial Arts.


A memorial service and luncheon will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Social Suite located at 5528 South Division Ave, Grand Rapids, MI 49548 from 2 to 5 p.m. Military Honors will be performed at 3 pm.
