Billy Ray Campbell, a man who packed a lifetime of laughter and love into his 87 years, left the stage of life for the final time on October 5, 2024. Born in Swifton, Arkansas, on October 12, 1937, Bill was the kind of guy who could light up a room with his quick wit and generous spirit. He took his final bow in Big Rapids, Michigan, after a valiant bout with Lewy Body Dementia.
The third of five sons to Ray Leon and Ollie Mae (Holder) Campbell, Bill was the last of the Campbell boys to say his goodbyes, joining his brothers Johnny William, Bobby Joe, Shelby Gene, and Buddy Paul, and brother-in-law, Bill Hortman who had preceded him in death—surely to set up the best family reunion, pranks included, on the other side. Bill's journey through life was marked by the love and laughter he shared with his high school sweetheart and wife of 67 years, Patricia (Hortman) Campbell, and their children, Judy (Steve) Reed, of Cedar Springs, Tracey (Jeff) Price, of Oregon, and Steve Campbell, of Big Rapids, who inherited his knack for joy and mischief.
A proud graduate of Lepanto High School, Bill was the epitome of a lifelong learner, always curious, always reading, and always ready to share a piece of trivia or a hearty guffaw. After marrying Pat, the couple set their sights on Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Bill's work ethic and charm led him to a fulfilling career of 30-plus years at H.H. Cutler Co. Whether he was supervising shipments, assisting in HR, or chatting with customers at the outlet store, Bill made sure that every encounter was sprinkled with humor and goodwill.
But work was just one act in Bill's vibrant life. An athlete at heart, he was a boxer and a baseball player who could also pitch a mean fast-pitch softball game. His sportsmanship continued through the years as he played for various softball teams, winning several trophies. He also loved to take up a friendly game of HORSE or pickup basketball with the kids, grandkids, and neighborhood kids. A true Michigan man, Bill proudly donned his Detroit Tigers cap and Detroit Lions jacket, embodying the undying hope and passion of a devoted fan.
Bill was a man who loved a good story, whether he was engrossed in a western, unraveling a mystery, or following a crime thriller. His love for reading was only surpassed by his love for making people laugh. A family gathering wasn't complete without one of Bill's famous practical jokes, leaving everyone in stitches and making memories that would last a lifetime.
Words like funny, friendly, and generous barely scratch the surface when describing Bill. He was the kind of guy who'd give you the shirt off his back, the last slice of pizza, and a joke to go with it, ensuring you'd leave with a full belly and an even fuller heart.
Bill's legacy is carried on by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will no doubt continue his tradition of practical jokes and grand storytelling. Rachel (Josh) Hunt, Jessica (Joe) Williams, Steven C. Reed, Crystal Hunter, Holly (Markus) Ascherl, Donald Hunter, Sabrina Campbell, Emma Campbell, and Justin Campbell; and eight great-grandchildren, Christian, Caleb, Landon, Millie, Atlas, Maverick, Ember, and Sage. They are all part of his spirited clan, each reflecting Bill's joyous and friendly nature in their own unique ways.
He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Laura Sue Isbill, Anne Marie Hortman, Margaret Campbell, Betty Campbell, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family; and last but not least, his dog Charlie, who was his best buddy during these last years.
We will have a celebration of Bill's life on Wednesday, October 9, at 11 a.m. at ResLife Church, 14734 215th Ave, Big Rapids, MI 49307. Please come as you are and share your stories with us. There will be a luncheon after where everyone will have a chance to talk about Bill if they would like to.
Donations will be accepted to help the family with expenses.
As we bid farewell to Bill Campbell, let's not mourn the loss of the man but celebrate the joy he brought into our lives. He taught us to laugh in the face of adversity, to love without limits, and to always keep a good joke at the ready. Bill may have left the building, but his laughter echoes in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him. So here's to Bill—a man who lived, loved, and laughed like no other. Curtain down, applause up, and, Bill, take your well-deserved bow.
